Representation in Literature

Hiya everyone. I’ve been a little AWOL from online lately, but here I am, and there’s a serious topic that needs to be discussed. With everything going on in the world right now, I think it’s important to talk about representation in literature. It is something that every author ought to be learning more about and integrating into their works, and it is something I myself am working to develop in my own books. I plan on making pages on this site dedicated to the topic, looking into different minorities individually, good sources to learn how to responsibly represent them, and works that I and others feel do this well. I would love to have input on this, as I am by no means an expert. If you have resources in mind that you think are valuable please share them- both for my sake and for that of friendly community collaboration.

For now- Black Lives Matter, Trans Lives Matter, LGBTQA+ Lives Matter… the list goes on. One day I would love for this topic to be nothing more than a severely tragic and painful history due to the dismantling of systems that benefit prejudiced ideas. Then we can just have people being people. People who love and are loved, and can enjoy the same rights that should be allowed to each individual equally, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual/romantic orientation, and (dis)ability status. Until that is possible, it is important to have in depth discussions regarding the disparities faced by different groups, how that affects us all as individuals and a society, and how we can be mindful of that in our writing. And, quite frankly, in our day to day lives.

So, this is a project I will be embarking on. I make no lies that these pages will spring up over night- I am currently working a full time job while doing research to responsibly represent autism in a book series I am working on while also researching grad school programs. It is, however, something I do plan on taking on as another project, as I feel it is an important one. Please, if you have any resources you feel should be included, any insights you feel should be discussed, or anything of the sort, I would love to hear from you.

Signing off now. Stay healthy, friends.
